To score high at GMAT quantitative section, how prepared are you to answer the number system questions is very crucial. Number System is one of the topic which have good number of questions at GMAT quantitative section. Moreover, the questions from this topic generally appear at data sufficiency type of questions which are very critical and tricky type of questions. Number System can be divided into various subtopics/concepts which are Factors/divisors, multiples, Unit digit, remainder and divisibility, odd and even, prime numbers, LCM and HCF, Consecutive integers and decimals.
One should always learn various, tricks and shortcuts besides understanding concepts to do these questions well. Most of the questions which come at Number System data sufficiency questions have C trap hence it is very important to read the question carefully, take out the critical information which is necessary to answer the given question and then start exploring statements.
Also It is very important to make right judgement about the first statement being sufficient or insufficient to answer the question. Since first statement help you zero down as whether the answer is A or D or it is from B, C, or E. Making wrong judgement about the first statement make almost certain to pick the incorrect answer. Also sometime not making the right interpretation of information being given in the statement also make you fall into the trap which exam setters generally intend you to fall into. For instance whenever it is mentioned that X is non negative integer in any of the statement, GMAT exam takers often interprate X being positive but that actually is wrong as x then can be zero also. Hence there might be chance that the moment you ignore zero as one of the value of X, you will fall into the trap and hence select the wrong answer. Hence it is very important to have enough exposure to variety of questions in the number system, understanding shortcuts and understanding deeper concepts and method of avoiding traps to choose the right answer.
